pretentiousness personified

the last couple of times i've hung out with my brother, richard, he's rambled on and on about his latest obsession. films.

most of the films he talks about, i've never seen. hell, most of the directors he talks about, i've never even heard of. some obscure japanese director from the 60s? what? i don't understand the words that come out of his mouth sometimes.

but his favorite film is the fire within (or, le feu follet.) a 1960s french film about a man who resolves to kill himself and then spends the day reconnecting with old friends.

so this afternoon i curled up on the couch with a cup of tea, a quilt, my two kitties, and this movie.

i liked it. i mean, it's nowhere near as enjoyable as my favorite film, what about bob, but delightful in that depressing, moody, self-obsessed, existential way that only the french can get away with.

note to ana: the scene in the royal tenenbaums in which richie says "i'm going to kill myself tomorrow" is a reference to this film.
