"juliet is the sun! or the moon?”

last night, cait and i saw romeo and juliet (a production of the nature theater of oklahoma.) but it wasn't romeo and juliet per se. the play is derived from phone conversations with nine people who were asked to tell the story of romeo and juliet. the result? the most wonderfully funny thing i've seen in a long time.

i started out trying to stifle my giggles. you know when you're in a theater and you're conscious of the people around you. and you're trying your best to behave? but after about ten minutes. i just gave up. forgot all about it. and just laughed and laughed and laughed.

(the ending though, to be honest, was a bit disappointing. it puts a damper on your mood. and feels much longer and more self-aware than it has to be.)

but regardless. i thought it was really fascinating. i spent the rest of the night reflecting on my own memories of romeo and juliet. and just being amazed by how we're all connected by this one work of literature. with our own distinct experiences. but yet, they're all somehow so very similar.

anyway.

the nytimes thought it was adorable. the new yorker seemed to have mixed feelings about it. and gothamist was filled with giddy joy.
